GET INVOLVED

In his January 2009 inaugural address, Mayor Kevin Johnson challenged all Sacramentans to volunteer and serve the community. In March 2009, he launched Volunteer Sacramento as his first policy initiative. Volunteer Sacramento aims to make Sacramento the most caring city in the nation through service. It strives to unleash the spirit of service throughout the Sacramento Region by encouraging and empowering Sacramentans of every age to contribute to the health and well-being of their neighbors, and their neighborhoods. Volunteer Sacramento will set a new standard for community involvement in tackling the city’s toughest problems, and it will promote service as a core part of what it means to be a citizen of the most caring city in the nation. The priority initiatives included in this plan build on the long tradition of volunteerism in Sacramento established by the early pioneers, faith organizations and a wide range of other non-profit organizations that contribute so much to the life and health of our City. Like all Cities of Service, Volunteer Sacramento focuses on “Impact Volunteering”- volunteer strategies that target community needs, use best practices, and set clear outcomes and measures to gauge progress.
